What I built on, in 2022

In 2021 I turned my attention to honing in the fundamentals of animation. As part of this practice, I took the Motion Design school class Motion Secrets with Emanuele Colombo. Through this class, I gained a new appreciation of movement, morphing, anticipation/follow-through, and match cutting. I feel very fortunate to have taken the class. Below are some highlights of my work, and sound-designed versions can be viewed on my Instagram.

Morphing and match cuts

Scale, rotation, and position. Three of the most basic ingredients of animation have allowed me to perform a magic trick. Using an animation’s momentum allows for fluid and dynamic morphs. The results of my practice are in the icon animation below. My animation was featured on Emanuele Colombo’s Instagram “Best of lesson 4&5”!

I certainly enjoyed working in this style. I finished up the class with an animated tribute to my family.

Frame-by-frame animation

Another development I’ve made over 2021 is my frame-by-frame animation. One great asset in learning new frame-by-frame techniques was Motion Practice with Ben Marriott. By drawing the action by hand pose-to-pose for a motion reference, I am able to refine the character and animation in after effects. It’s the best of both worlds and I continue to practice daily.
