School of Motion
Advanced Motion Methods
Motion Design gives me the opportunity to constantly be learning new ways to work. After taking part in the #everyday project, I knew there was a higher level that couldn’t be reached alone. That's why in 2020 I turned to School of Motion and took their Advanced Motion Methods course, based on the style and approach it's instructor Sander van Dijk.
While the class had plenty of handy tips and tricks, it turned out to be much more than any mere tutorial. We were assigned active TA’s to help and critique our work. The goal of the class was to teach animators more thoughtfulness in motion design. I learned a new appreciation for the liberal arts and the human experience. Learning what comforts people, unlocking a formula that makes the animation just feel right.
Another focus was learning to deal with complexity. The assignments for the class started off small, but gradually the projects ramped up in difficulty. They ended up being some of the hardest assignments I’ve been handed in my career. I wouldn’t say I walked away feeling like I had aced it. If anything I felt like I need to go to summer school. Though I struggled, I’m grateful for what I gained.
These are some of the projects I created while taking the class.
